OUTBREAKS OF FIRE.
BLAZE IN NEWMARKET SHOP.
STOCK BADLY DAMAGED.
BRIGADE'S HARD FIGHT.
A fire, which was extinguished only after a strenuous fight by firemen, occurred shortly after 8.30 p.m. yesterday in a shop in Broadway, Newmarket, owned by Mr. Beswick and occupied by Miss C. Sutherland, fancy goods dealer. When the ,Newmarket fire brigade, which promptly responded to the alarm, arrived the flames had a strong hold of the rear portion of the shop. A dense volume of smoke was rising from the fire and it was over an hour before the outbreak was subdued. The brigade, however, worked well and succeeded in confining the blaze to the back part of the premises. The building was not greatly damaged, but extensive damage was dono to Miss Sutherland's stock. Considerable damage also was done by water in the adjoining shop, which is occupied by Mr. C. Taylor, mercer, and which was unharmed by fire. Nothing was known last evening as to the cause of the outbreak.
