TROUBLE AT RANFURLY. 'ATTEMPTED MURDER CHARGE. [bt telegraph.—press association.] DUiNLDIN, Monday. An encounter with firearms took placo at Ranfurly on Wednesday, between two farmers, George Devenney and William Griffin Dowling, who occupy farms divided only by a road. Unpleasantness developed, j and it is alleged that Devenney armed with 1 a shotgun, went over to see Dowling, and, i as the latter came down the road towards j him, opened fire, Dowling ran away, and j Devenney, it is further alleged, put another cartridge in his gun and again fired, miss- ] injj Dowling and also his son, who waa near by. Constable Bandy witiiessed the shooting, and fired a shot from his revolver ovor Devenne/s head as a caution. The latter, it is stated, ignored the ■warning, and fired a third shot, which narrowly missed Constable Bandy. The constable thereupon fired low at Devenney and the bullet struck the ground at his feet, splashing dirt and sand in his face. Devenney tfien dropped his gun and ran across the peddock. Later he was arrested, and was brought to Dunedin last night to answer a charge of attempted murder. RESULT OP A QUARREL. OLD MAN ARRESTED. [BT TELEGRAPH. —riIESS ASSOCIATION.] DUNEDIN, Monday. A shooting affray at Cannibal Bay, near Owaka, resulted in the arrest of Edmund Treherne on a charge of shooting at George Wilson with intent to do bodily iiarm. It is alleged that Wilson went to Treherne's house, where the couple had a few drinks together. An altercation arose, words led to blows, and Treherne, an old man, had the worst of the encounter. He went into his bedroom, took a loaded revolver from tba v mattress, and is alleged to have fired two shot& at Wilson. Both missed, and Wilson ran into another room. Treherne, however, went out at the back and is alleged to have fired a third shot, at Wilson. Wilson thereupon jumped out of the window, and wrestling with Treherne, took the revolver from him. Treherne was remanded to appear at Dunedin on Saturday nest.
