HOBSON BAY RECLAMATION.

CONSTRUCTION OF SEWER. DRAINAGE BOARD PLANS. The proposed reclamation of portion of Hobson Bay formed the subject of a report presented to the Auckland and Suburban Drainage Board last evening by the engineer-secretary, Mr. H. H. WatMr Watkuis referred to the board'it undertaking to so construct the sewer from the ParneU foreshore to the western side cf the Orakei baßin channel as to form a retaining wall to enable the Harbour Board to reclaim land on the south side of the sewer. As the result of negotiations the sewer was constructed to permit of the free ebb and flow of the waters in the bay. As a guarantee that the statutory requirements would be ultimately 1 complied with the board executed an agreement in favour of the Harbour Board, and also placed on fixed deposit in the joint names of the chairman of each board a sum of £6600. By permission of the Harbour Board tho deposit \vas_ repaid into the Drainage Board's account in September, 1914, a guarantee being given to replace it upon demand by the Harbour Mr. Watkins said he understood there was now a suggestion to proceed with reclamation work in the bay, which wou.d necessitate the construction of at least a portion of the retaining wall. It would of course be imposrble to construct the whole length of the wall at present for tho sum set apart, owing to the considerable increase in the cost of materials and advance in waces. the agreement provided for a total length of 5080 lineal feet of wall, which he estimated would nowcost £11,000 to construct. If, however, tho western a*sa of tho bay was only cow to ho dealt with, the construction of some 2300 lineal feet of wall would be suffir'eut, which ho estimated would cost- £5250. , These estimates were based noon data preI pared in 1909. and he) therefore requested that authority be riven to have a «;«pSg.
