PUBLIC BODIES.

A WIDE-AWAKE COMMUNITY. Whangarei has obviously come to a period in its*history when "Progress" is an accepted slogan. It is happy in having an exceptionally alert number of business men associated with its public bodies. The County Council is prosecuting a vigorous policy of reading, and this 1 branch of their progressive activities is an example of the spirit that animates all their work. The Borough Council has recently been enlarged from six to nine members, with a view to a more efficient and representative discharge of its duties, and the fact that it is successfully floating a local loan of several thousands at 6 per cent, indicates something of its activity. It is confronting a programme ; that includes new streets, town planning,, a thorough system of rubbish destruction, the widest possible extension of electric- , "ity, and sewage connections, and tbe i erection of municipal baths. The Harbour Board is engaged upon the important improvements already referred to, and it is significant that some months ago, when the market was hard, ■ it successfully placed a hundred thousand loan in Sydney at 7 per cent. I The Hospital Board has acquired the : Kamo farm property, and made it a valu. able source of milk and produce supply, \ and at present the board is drafting a i new policy of administration, both for the main hospital and for Eamo Springs. Movement! Movement out of old ruts into the realisation of all that is best i in the new methods of a new ag<>, seems to bo the key note. And behind these ' representative bodies there are the vohin- . tary organisations of the Beautifying • Society (which has done remarkable ' work), and the Chamber of Commerce, ' each filling a very important place in i the progress of the township and community. The vigilant and quickening in--1 fluence of the Chamber of Commerce is a ; valuable asset, and destined to become ini creasingly so.
