CLASSIFICATION SCHEME.

RAT FOOD IN THE PARKS;

Tho rubbish lips of the city were the subject of a report by tho Mayor, Mr. J. 11. Gunson, to lho City Council last evoning. Tho report stated that after an inspection of tho tips it had been decided that lho tips bo classified into two groups, namely, thoso which may remain open, but under tho absolute control of tho chief sanitary inspector of the council, -Mr. C. T. Haynes, who would enforco all requirements to bring them into as desirable a condition as Possible, and tips which must bo closed forthwith.

It was recommended that tho following 14 tips bo set apart in torms of bylaw 408 for tho deposit of rubbish:— Council tips: Grafton Road, opposite bowling green; Exmouth Street, Newton; Hopetoun Street, Western Park; Garnet Street, Grey Lynn; Bercsford Street, opposito school; Nelson Street. Privato tips: Maungawhau Road, Epsom; Meadowbank, Road, Rcmuera; Hohipcro Street, off Symonds Street; Dignan Street, Ponsonby; Anglesca Street, Ponsonby; Randolph Street, Newton; Newton Road. The private tips will bo authorised if owners apply forthwith in tcrm s of tho by-law. Tho report recommended that the council's tip in Stanley Street should bo closed, as well as privato tips in Park Crescent, Richmond Hill, Douglas Street, Wellington and Hepburn Street corner, and Mountain Road, Epsom. It further recommended that tho council immediately consider the provision of further suitable 6anitary works for the treatment of refuse, and that tho matter bo referred to the works committeo for immediate consideration.

Tho report was adopted. Referring to the campaign against rats being carried on in tho city, tho chief sanitary inspector reported that largo numbers of the rodents were being killed every day, but it was very difficult to cope with the rats in certain localities adjacent to the parks. These areas wero largely used by young peoplo during tho luncheon hour, and scraps of food wero left lying about, with tho result that rats infested such areas and the adjacent buildings.
