BREAKDOWN AT SEA.

MISHAP TO MARAROA. TUG WATCHING VESSEL. SHIP NOT IN DANGER. [BI TELEGBAPH—PRESS ASSOCIATION.] WELLINGTON. Tuesday. ! The Mararoa, which sailed at 7.50 p.m. j for Lyttelton, despatched a wireless message at 8.45 p.m. stating that a breakdown had occurred in her machinery, and she was unable to steam. The tug Terawhiti left at 10.15 p.m. to tow the Mararoa back to port. She arrived alongside the vessel at 11.10 p.m. The sea is smooth, with a light wind off shore, and a drizzling rain. The tug Pelican left at 11.10 p.m. to assist in the tow. About 130 passengers are aboard the Mararoa. The vessel was outside the Heads when the mishap occurred in water too deep to anchor. There was no alarm among the passengers. Repairs are expected to be effected in time for the vessel to sail on Thursday. The Prime Minister made a statement in the House to-night as to the absence of danger, and said a safe tow into port was assured. At midnight a message from the Mararoa stated: "Endeavouring to effect repairs. Will know at 1 a.m. if able to proceed to Lyttelton." The tug is standing ; alongside the Mararoa, which has not drifted noticeably since the mishap.
