PRISONERS ON STRIKE.
TROUBLE IN MELBOURNE. COMPLAINT OF HUMILIATION A. »nd N.Z. MELBOURNE. Oct. 10. lhe strike microbe penetrated into Peutridga prison. Following upon the search of cells for contraband a large number of prisoners refused to work as a protest against what they claimed was a humiliating system. Prompt measures were taken to crush the revolt. At a subsequent inquiry 140 prisoners were charged with insubordination. The governor pleaded for leniency for the majority because they were coerced by the leaders. Sixty were sentenced to additional terms of imprisonment ranging from a week to a month.
