UNDER LEAGUE RULES.

JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL.

NEWTON DEFEATS MARITIME.

The final of the second grade League championship was played at Carlaw Park on Saturday between Newton and Maritime, the former winning by 17 points to 11 points and securing the championship. Play throughout was fast and open with both sides throwing the ball about and tho rapidity of the exchanges sustained the interest of the spectators to the finish. The teams were very evenly matched and the game was keeidy contested. The forwards of both sides played a hard game, and excellent form was shown in the loose, but a tendency to kick too hard frequently spoilt good chances of scoring. The handling of the backs was for the most part accurate, but there was a tendency in the Maritime rearguard to drive the passing rushes straight across the field, crowding the wings on the touch lino. On the run of the play Newton was slightly the better team, and lasted well to the finish of a hard-fought game* The teams were as follows :— Maritime. — Fullback. Man ley; threequarters, Brien, Macpherson, Grantley: fiveeighths, Herd and Grey; halfback. Nicholson; forwards. Helsby. Lee. Brake. Dance, Wilkis, Young. Newton.—Fullback. Ryan; threequarters, Lorensori, Newdick. Wade; five-eighths. Patterson, Gregory; halfback, Condon; forwards. Francis. Brockliss, Barraclough. Biggs, Edwards. Culpan. Newton attacked from the outset, but good kicking .by Maritime relieved, and play settled in midficid for a time. The game was being strenuously contested and both packs of forwards were playing hard and setting the backs in motion when opportunity offered. A good passing rush by the Maritime backs and a kick over the line compelled Newton to force. After the drop out the Newton backs got away and Wade made a fine run, passing in to Newdick. who dashed over and scored a try. which was not converted. Newton 3 points. Maritime 0. Newton barks were again on attack, but Newdick. who was playing a sound game at centre, was tackled before he became dangerous. Maritime responded, and a passing rush by the backs ended in Grantley scoring near the corner flag. The tick at goal failed, and with the scores even the Maritime forwards got on a good rush with Wilkie in the van, that player scoring Maritime's second try. Again the kick at goal failed. After the drop out the Newton forwards rushed play into the Maritime twenty-five, where the hacks were set in motion and Sorenson securing at the end of the passing bout scored a fine try. The place-kicking was poor and again the kick at goal failed. With the scores even, 6 points each, a passing rush by the Maritime backs broke down within a few yards of the Newton line. A free kick relieved the pressure and play swung to midfield. where Gregory broke through and set up a hot attack for Newton. Opposed by the Maritime fullback. Gregory passed to Patterson, who scored a try which Gregory subsequently converted. Play up to this stage had been fast and open, with both sides throwing the ball about. Maritime backs were getting a fair share of the ball, but their passing frequently went, straight across the field. Maritime attacked and a return kick was marked by Grey, who placed the ball for Manley to kick a goal. Just on half-time Maritime again attacked, and a. good run by Brien finished up in Newton's twenty-five. Play swung to the left wing and Herd raced over, scoring a try which Manley failed to convert The whistle sounded immediately for half-time. with the scores:

Maritime . . . . , . . . 11 Newton 11 On resumption play settled to mid-field, but a fast rush by the Maritime forwards changed the scene of action to Newton twenty-five, where hard kickine relieved the pressure. From a. scrum, the ball came out to the Maritime backs, but too hard kicking enabled Newton to force. After the drop out, Newton broka away and set up a hot attack in Maritime territory, where, from a penalty. Gregory just failed to kick a goalAttack and counter-attack followed, and an exchange of kicks saw play in Newton's twenty-five. From the subsequent play Wade secured and found touch near the Maritime line. Maritime came a-gain. and a good forward rush, headed by Wilkie. placed Newton on defence. Newton cleared, and the forwards set up an attack. From a s £rum at Maritime twenty-five, Condon sent the ball out and a passing rush, in which practicalb* the whole of the Newton backs took part, ended in Sorenson soorinE at the corner, after a good run. The kick at goal failed, and Newton led with 14 points to 11 points. Attack and counter-attack followed, and with the play on the touch line at mid-field. Brien tackled Wade and attempted to put hirn down after he had got rid of the ball. Wade retaliated by pushing Bricn down, and the incident catching the eye of the referee, both players were ordered off the field. On resumption. Newton made strenuous efforts on attack, and from a scramble Sorenson forced bis way line, scoring a try which Edwards failed to convert. A forward rush bv Maritime v;as intercepted by Patterson, who. with a fine dribbling run. carried play in'o Maritime twenty-five, where the same ended with the score a: Newton .. t. , 4 - mi ..17 Maritime .. t s . . 1! 11 Mr. L. The competing teams, Northcote and H.M.S. Philomel, had played a pointless draw a week previously, and Saturday's game leaves the position unaltered, as neither side were ab|o to register a goal. Tho weather was fine, with the ground in good order, and a crowd of well over 1000 spectators was easily a record for a local club match. Play was fast and full ->i incident, and although the luck seemed to slightly favour Northcote, the draw was a good indication of the respectivo men's of the two teams.

NORTHCOrE V. H.M.S. PHILOMEL. The sailors won the toes, and Corbett secured from the kick off, putting hia aide immediately on the offensive with a welljudged pass to the forwards. Heatley. Hooper was particularly unforlunir'o not to score on several occasions, on e of h.s shots striking the upright, while an-'jer which looked like a certain goal, was brilliantly saved by Craxton, in goal for Northcote. The Xorthcote forwards were not slow U> take advantage of their opportunities, and Although getting, fewer than their opponents. occaa.onaUy delighted the spectators with brisk paasing movements. which gained much ground. Following a. spell of <nve-and-take play, a, fine wing run by Hodgson put the navy men on the defensive and Calvert waj prominent, tackling well and clearing upheld. Play settled for a tiino in r\orthcote's twenty-five, but on this occasion the sailors' shooting was orratic, and Oolvin relieved the danger with a splendid kick to half-way. For Northcote Corrin at halfback was playing a very sound game, and a good pass to Baker saw the latter cleverly penetrate t.be defence and pass to Wilson in a good position. The shot went wide, however and from the kick out Philomel rushed play J-o their opponent*' goal, where a corner kick was conceded. Nothing ,arue of it, and half-tune sounded without score On resuming the sailors attacked smartly and things were looking dangerous for INorthcote when Colvin cleared in splendid style putting the bail out at half-wav Heatley secured from the throw-in. and. racing down the line, sent in a splendid centre, which Hooper beaded just over the Play continued for a spell in Northcote s twenty-five. Craxton in goal making some brilliant saves from shots taken at close range. A few minutes later Baker Tremain and Wilson swept down the field in great style, «vading the sailors' defence and testing Batty with a series of stingni? nhots. The goal ten per wag eaual to the occasion saving w«ll amid applause. Alter Philomel had been awarded a penalty, which Craxton saved cleverly. Northcote appeared to get the better of matters, and during tha latter stages of thf> game were continually on the offensive. & fine individuaj effort
