WHAU BRIDGE AGREEMENT.

REPAIRS AND MAINTENANCE.

DETAILS OF ARRANGEMENT. An agreement has been reached by the local bodies concerned regarding the Whan Bridge. Details were received by the Waitemata County Council yesterday from the commission which went into the question. The report stated that the representatives of the various local bodies had agreed as follows: —The New Lynn Town Board shall be the controlling body, and shall repair the bridge at a cost not exceeding £500. The contributions toward such repairs and future maintenance shall be paid as follows:—City Council, 27£ per cent.; New Lynn Town Board, 25 per cent. ; Waitemata County Council, 25 per cent.; Ayordale Road Board, 15 per cent.j Mount Albert Borough Council, 4 per cent. : Mount Eder Borough Council, 3£ per cent. The Waitemata County Council's liability is reduced from 50 per cent, to 25 per cent. The council must in future see that as new local districts are created they take up a fair share of the liability, and a share of the county's liability for the construction and upkeep of Blake Street and the portion of the New North Road in the Avondale road district. In presenting the report to the council the county engineer, Mr. G. Jackson, wrote:—"l wish. to state that I do not approve of the proposal to repair the bridge by renewing the decking only, and not strengthening the nnderstructure, but I took no part in this part of the agreement, as I understand it was your policy if New Lynn took over the control of the bridge to allow them a free hand. It was the other local bodies who tied them down to £500."
