. t ANDERSON BEATS WILLIAMS. A MASTERLY 1 EXHIBITION. A. and N.Z. NEW YORK, Sept. 14. In the fourth round of the American national lawn tennis championships, J. 0. Anderson (Australia) defeated B. N. Williams (United States), 6—3, 6—3, 2—6, 4—6, 6—4. Anderson won- his way into the fifth round by a masterly exhibition, ' Williams was erratic, especially in serving. The American made an effort in the third' and fourth sets, but thereafter lost confidence, losing the match by four double faults in the last set.' The correspondent of' the New York Times states that Anderson's masterful victory _ over' Williams showed that the Australian is among the best, tennis players in the world. He quickly took the lead by two games to one in the first' set. Williams, who was fighting stubbornly, evened the score to three all. 'Anderson by cool play won the next three games. Williams fought hard in the next set, winning the first game after Anderson was 40 to love, and breaking through Anderson's service in the third and sixth games. Williams won live games in succession in the third set, and lost the first and seventh games.* Williams won the fifth set because of Anderson's erratic playing, but the sixth set wus a quick victory for the Australian.
