LONDON'S DRINK HOURS.
EXTENSION DELAYED. LONDON. Aug. 27. New rule s issued by the Home Secretary to-day postpone the thirstily anticipated extension of the liquor hours, even to the extent of midnight supper drinks. Tne Licensing Act comes into force on September 1, but license holders must apply to the Licensing Sessions in September, in addition to notifying the local police superintendent. Hence the drink curfew cannot end in the City of London before September 14, and in the West End before October 4.
Moreover, both police and justices must be satisfied that the hotel oR restaurant is a fit and proper place. This may lead to trouble where rival establishments, though possibly in the same street, are situated in different licensing areas, and are dependent, upon the discretion of the magistrates for the new privilege.
