LONDON, Sept. 6The weath«r was glorious, but the wicket -was a trifle damp when the match between Australia and the South of England was resumed to-day. The attendance was small. The Englishmen, in their second innings, made exactly the same score as in the first, namely, 199. Armstrong and Mailey divided the bowling honours.

The overnight scores were :—Australia, first innings, 444; England, first innings. 199; second innings, 15 for two wickets, Strudwick and Lee resumed to the bowling of Mailey and McDonald. The batting was lively, and the partnership added 60 in 43 minutes. Strudwick was then taken at the wicket, the, score being 69.

Ashton helped to keep the field busy until just after the century was reached, when he got his leg in front of Armstrong. Lee, when 64, was finely caught in front of the screen : 5—113—64.

Meanwhile Armstrong made several changes in the bowling. After lunch Gregory was not available owing to a hurt knee. With Wilson and Tate dismissed, the score stood at seven wickets for 136. The Gilligan-Relf partnership was sparkling, and put on 37 runs, but the last wicket fell at 199, Australia thus winning by an innings and 46 runs. Woolley (Kent), C. P. Mead (Hampshire), J. W. Hearne (Middlesex), E. Hendren (Middlesex), J. W. Hitch (Surrey), A. Sandham (Surrev). Of these 13 players, all but Chapman and Wood have played in one or more test matches this season.

Mayne has asked to be left ont of the Australian team in the remaining match, having bad too little opportunity to practise.
