SEVERE EARTHQUAKE.
DAMAGE AT RUATOREA. [By TELEGRAPH— PRESS ASSOCT \TION. ] GISBOKNE, Wednesday Ruatorea reports a fairly severe earthquake at 1.50 p.m. yesterday. The shock caused many breakages in s i OTes and houses. About two hours afterwards a more severe earthquake took place, doine considerable damage in the district A number of chimneys were cracked and some severely, damaged, so much so that m £r/k reS i. are fraid to U Sbt fires. This shock did more damage at the stores Huge rocks were seen falling from the mountains up Tapuaroa Valley, raisin* clouds of dust A number of tremors and slight earthquakes were felt between * p.m. and 10 p.m. Ruatorea is 82 miles distant from Gisborne and five miles from Tuparoa a coastal port near East Cape
