AUCKLAND SOCIETY OF ARTS
ENCOURAGING STUDENTS.
RE-ELECTION OF OFFICERS.
The fortieth annual meeting of the Auckland Society of Arts was held last evening, avid there was a fair attendance, the president, Mr. H. E. Vaile, occupying the chair.
The president said it was thought that other exhibitions besides the annual one fih uld held, such as a sketch or an arte and crafts exhibition. An exhibition of paintings, sculpture, copperware, silverware, etc., from private collections would prove interesting. The difficulty in the way of holding such an exhibition was the provision cf protection for the exhibits. It would be almost impossible to m?ke sucb subsidiary exhibitions financial snccesses, and at present the soci&ty could hardly afford to hold them. The report and balance-sheet, a summary of which_ was published in the Hebald on August 24 were adopted. Mr. E. Kohn said that he noticed nothing in the annual report regarding the encouraging of art students. He thought that if the society could not afford to give prizes it might offer encouragement by admitting the six leading art students to the annual exhibition.
The president said he would recommend the suggestion to the council for favorable consideration. He thought that the society could afford to give prizes Amendments to the rules were carried to enable the society to grant a donation up to £50 to any person or object, and to enable the council to buy, sell or exchange any of the movable property of the society. It was stated that the latter amendment would enable the council to sell a number of old pictures that were only taking up valuable space. All the officers were re-elected, as follows:—President, Mr. H. E. Vaile; vicepresidents. Sir Edwin Mitchelson ' Hon A. M. Myers. M.P., Dr. T. W. Levs' Messrs. H. Brett, D. Goidie, E. E. Vaile B.
