PREVALENCE OF CANCER.
INVESTIGATING CAUSES.
NO WORK IN DOMINION. [BY TELEGRAPH—PBESS ASSOCIATION.] WELLINGTON. Saturday. It has been suggested lately that New Zealand ought to undertake some research into the causes of cancer, and not merely await the result of" researches in other countries. The Minister for Public Health, the Hon. C. J. Parr, referred this suggestion to the head of the Health Department for a report as to whether research is being undertaken in New Zealand, and, if notj whether research was desirable. DayT. H. A. Valintine, in reply, slates that no special research is being undertaken in New Zealand. He points out that the increased prevalence of cancer is worlds wide, and not confined to New Zealand. The department is fully alive to the seriousness of the matter, and is keeping in close touch with the Imperial cancer fund committee in London, and with other research ' organisations. Special research in New Zealand does not seem practicable. The community is not large enough to provide clinical material for thorough research, and cannot give facilities for close co-operation of experts in various branches of research. Advancement in the treatment is being watched carefully.
