AMERICAN OPINION.
SINN FEIN EVASIVE.
LIBERAL TERMS OFFERED.
RENEWAL OF WAR A CRIME.
By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. 'Received 8.30 p.m.) A- and N.z. jrarW YORK. Aug. 27. The New York Times, commenting editorially on De Valera's reply to Mr. Llovd George, observes:—" Any fanatic leader who now needlessly plunged Ireland into murderous warfare again would find it. hard to maintain himself. It is this conviction, doubtless, which lies behind De Valera's eagerness that his rejection of the British proposals be not taken as literal and final, and that discussion be continued. So long as it is there is hope of settlement." The New York Evening Post says: •' Mr. Lloyd George can justify his action with argument. He offered the Irish even more than recognition of the principle of government by consent of the governed. Even if the somewhat truculent beginning j of De Valera's reply were not eaten up | by its miid conclusion, it would be destroyed by its own lack of convincing | logic. The British conditions cannot hamper the rsaJ destinies of the Irish people." The New York Tribune says: ' : The Irish reply is evasive and laboured, and does not breathe sufficient conviction that a resumption of " bushwa-cking" warfare would be a crime against civilisation and an affront to the hopes and judgment of the rest of the world. The British terms are liberal. Can De Valera expect more?"
