The Auckland representative touring team played the second match oi its tour at JSeison Park to-day against Hawke's Bav. -the weather wa3 ideal and the ground in excellent .condition, being hard and true, ine team recorded their second win by 3 goals to 0. although at half-time no score had been registered, and it was not until the closing stages that the Auckland forwards played with their usual nippiness. lfle teams were:—
Auckland.—Goalkeeper. Cooper; fullbacks, bpeight and England; halves. Mcleod. Johns and Steele; forwards. Alexander, C. Watts. JSiowsham, Somers and Frater. Hawke's Bay.—Goalkeeper. Ball; fullbacks, li. Brimmer and Jones; halves, Bradshaw. Davis and Collinge: forwards. ■Lie ±ias. Crawford. R. Brimmer. Bownes and Land. >
From the commencement Auckland Earned *»* advantage and attacked consistently. a i, '? r t] ? e Sweater part of the first spell field the upper band. The attack -was not, however, well executed, and many opportunities were lost through poor play in the circle, coupled with a magnificent defence by the Hawte's Bay custodian, and effective hitting by the local backs. At this stage it was largely a duel between the Northern forwards and halves and the Hawke's Bay back division. The second spell provided a better exhibition of hockey and was weH contested, the' local forwards taking a turn and play frequently becoming fast and exciting. _ Halfway through Somers goaled, and this success enlivened the Auckland forwards, who played with better combination. Although the locals made some smart runs in an endeavour to eaualise. the visiting backs played with great judgment and generally had the position in hand, the Auckland goalkeeper only once being called upon to save.
For Auckland Speight gave an impressive exhibition, winning the ball and clearing with nice judgment. England wa3 a sound partner, while the halves showed much cleverness, and their stick play was. remarkable. Johns was strong both in defence and attack, while the reverse strokes of HcLeod and Steel© called for much applause, and frequently turned defence into attack. The forwards were below form, and for the greater part were disappointing, although they all made amends in the last ten minute's. Alexander was the best, but lacked support, and while Frater was usually dangerous, a tendency to hold on too long somewhat spoiled his The inside men failed at the critical time. Watta was below form until the closing stages, when he initiated several nice attacks and scored a fin© goal. Newsham was troubled with his foot, but bis goal was also a smart piece of work. Somers was the best of the insides. and worked hard throughout
On th© Hawke's Bay' side chief honours go to the goalkeeper Ball, -who maintained a remarkable defence. The fullbacks. Brimmer and Jones, were both very sound and their sure hitting upset their opponents' attack time and again. The halves also performed creditably, Bradshaw perhaps being th© best. The _ forwards, like th© backs, were inclined to hit too bard- Crawford, Laud and Le Bas were the most prominent. Messrs. MagQl «. - Taylor refereed. The Aucklanders were entertained at a dance to-night, and leave for Palmerston North on Monday morning. HAMILTON COMPETITION. ! [BT TELEGRAPH. —OWN COKKESPONDENT-] HAMILTON, Saturday.
