CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.

' / " HANDLING GOODS ON WHARF. PRACTICE IN WELLINGTON. The council of the Auckland ChamLer of Commerce met yesterday, the president, Mr. A. G. Lunn, occupying the chair. A deputation consisting of Messrs. S. JHarbutt, J. A. C. Allum, and A. G. Lunn and the Rev. A. B. Chappell, was appointed to wait on the Minister for Public Works, the Hon. J. G. Coates, during his visit to 'Auckland next Monday to report upon the visit recently made to Arapuni in coimection with the hydro; electric scbame for Auckland. The handling of goods from wharf into railway trucks was dealt with in a letter from the Wellington Harbour Board,'■which stated that the general practice in Wellington was to deliver from the sheds by cart, motor track, or other vehicle to the railway yard. Whole cargoes intended for rail were discharged direct from the ships' sliiv-f, into railway tracks, the Railway Department tallying and giving a receipt to the ship at the railway yard, while the Harbour Board supplied no labour and charged a lower rate of wharfage. Dissatisfaction with the tallying arrangements at Auckland was expressed by several members, and the question was referred to the Shipping Committee. Protests were received from the Auckland Retail Drapers' Association, and from the Dunedin Chamber of Commerce against the supply of school requisites by the Education Department. The letters expressed the conviction that no real saving would be effected, thai the loss through customs duty would have to be made up in some other direction, while reduction of trade would press very severely on many engaged in the retail business. Ibe letters were received. The need, for a vigorous campaign and retrenchment in the Government service, and the discharge of those employees who could well be spared, was urged in a letter from Mr. J. Thornes. Mr. R. Burns drew attention to the. fact that a commission had already been appointed to go into the matter of employment in the Civil Service, and he moved that a letter be sent to Sir Francis Bell asking whether ally report had yet been made, and if so, whether the council might have a copy.
