HAWTHORN IN THE CITY.
REQUEST FOR DESTRUCTION.
A deputation from the New Zealand Federation of Fruitgrowers and the Auckland Fire Blight Committee waited* on the City Council last evening to ask that body to hawthorn a noxious weed in the city area on account of it being a host plant for fire blight disease. It was pointed out that hawthorn and fruit trees could not live together. A large part of the Auckland district was infected by the blight, 'which was rapidly spread by bees. It had been found that hawthorn _ was one of the worst carriers of the disease, and one of the most difficult from which to .eliminate the disease. It was desired to cut out the hawthorn in the centre of a district surrounded by fruit-growing- areas. The matter was referred to the Works Committee.
