FLAXMILLING PROSPECTS.
LITTLE DEMAND FOR FIBRE.
EARLY SEASON UNLIKELY.*
The -flaxmilis in th©» Auckland district are all closed down for the season, and at present it is uncertain when operations will be resumed. The representative of a firm that deals largely in flax stated yes terday that there was very little demand for fibre just now. Unless the market improved within th e next few weeks there little prospect of the mills resuming in September, which was the usual time for starting the season. At the beginning .of last season the price of hemp on the British market was sufficiently good to enable the mills to keep working, not/withstanding 'that shipping freights were extremely high. These conditions continued till early in Januaryj when the price of hemp on the London market experienced a drop of-about £10 "a ton- This serious decline in price rendered milling operations unprofitable, though a reduction in freight rates of £5 a ton was made by the shipping companies. These conditions still exist, and the Opinion of .those interested in the industry is that unless the position improves in the meantime very few of the local mills will reopen early in the coming season. e 9 w
