CIVIL SERVICE SALARIES.
£10,000,000 LESS THIS TEAR Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. ' (Reed. 10.15 p.m.) LONDON, July 26Evidence is accumulating that the Government is seriously heading the antiwaste campaign. Sir Robert Home, Chancellor of the Exchequer, in the House of Commons, replying to criticisms of excessive salaries paid to Civil servants, said that the staffs of pre-war departments had increased from 283,000 to 312,000. This would be investigated. Fifty per* cent, of the 300,000 Civil servants entitled to a war bonus, received less than 35s a week, exclusive of the bonus. Eighty per cent, of the whole had less than £200"a year. Only 6000 received salaries above £500 a year, and 777 received above £1000 a year. An amount of £10,000,000 would automatically come off the bonuses in September. Apart from this reduction the Government had decided not to reduce salaries under £500 a year, but no bonus should be paid to those receiving salaries over £1000.
