STRANDED EMIGRANTS.
COMPENSATION BY PERU. ' ' LONDON, July 14. In the House of Commons at question time the Under-Secretary for the Colonies, ' Mr. E. L. Wood, stated that £2000, which had been promised by the Peruvian Government, had been received, and would be distributed among the claim- , ants. He understood that more emigrants were returning from Peru, and if necessary the Government would submit 1 further claims for compensation. i On June 23 it was stated in the House . of Commons that emigrants had been enticed to Peru by the promise of hiiro. wages, which was not fulfilled. Mr. ' Wood informed the House that argent 1 representations were being made to the ; Peruvian Government for compensation.
