THE UNIVERSITY BUILDING.

The University College Council appears to have reached its final decision on the plans of the new arts building, which are now before the ! Minister for. Education. Evidently the council is satisfied with the ex- ' pert decision, but it can hardly be said that either the council or the ' experts have convinced the public ' that the selected plans make the best possible use of the funds at the disposal of the college. There is, of course, great room for difference of • opinion on such a subject, and layl men hesitate to condemn when . architects of repute have approved. But when full weight has been given ■ to the standing of the Advisory Committee it remains to be said that the design has not made a wide appeal r to the lay taste of Auckland. It is - to be hoped the building will grow . upon the community as its erection j. proceeds. For ourselves we have sufficient faith in the future of Auckland to believe that the college will ultimately be compelled to seek a * site beyond the city, and in that b view we hold that the money now i available could be spent to better ~ advantage in providing ample acy commodation in a plain dignified T building than in the erection of the pretentious ornamental tower which , is the feature of the adopted design.
