THEFT BY YOUNG WOMAN.

THREE YEARS' PROBATION

The theft of a gold wristlet watch and a set of silver beads valued at £10, the property of Elizabeth Hodgson, was admitted by Evelyn Louisa Rose, aged 23, who appeared before Mr. W. R. McKean, S.M., in the Police ' Court yesterday. Chiief-detective McMahon said that accused had stolen the articles while working on the premises and when trouble seemed imminent had posted .them back. Although the daughter of very respectable parents, she had not been conducting herself weii and she stiould be placed under restraint for an extensive peuod. At the suggestion of the chief-detective the magistrate admitted the accused to three years probation with the stipulation that the fust year should be spent in the Salvation Army Home. FROCK STOLEN FROM SHOP. Gertrude Benton, a married woman, admitted the theft of a frock valued at £13 13s from Smith and Ltd. Chief-detective McMahon said the daughter, against whom a charge had been dismissed, was 6een at a football match wearing a frock which was identified as the property, of the firm. She said it was a present from her mother. Her mother subsequently admitted having gone to the shop to make a purchase but instead had slipped the garment into her .capacious handbag. In reply to a request by counsel that the names be suppressed from publication the magistrate said he was not in favour of the suppression of names and people who committed offences were not entitled to sympathy on that matter. Accused was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence in 12 months, in the meantime to make immediate restitution of £13 13s and £2 costs.

THEFT IN HOTEL BAR. A charge of having stolen 15s from Fraser Edwards was admitted by Robert Perrett, aged 39. The circumstances were that on Saturday when in the bar of an hotel the- accused took the change of another man from the counter and went outside. Accused pleaded that he was under the influence of liquor at the time and he had a wife and four children. He was fined £2 and costs 30s, in default 10 days' imprisonment.
