THE ASSOCIATION GAME.

THE RUGBY 'GAME. TOUR OF TfiE SPRINGBOKS. i WELCOME AT NEW PLYMOUTH. [BY TELECEAPH.—PRESS ASSOCIATION".] NEW PL £ MOUTH. Thursday. The Springboks had a triumphant reception at every station along the line on their journey from Wanganui. At New Plymouth they were met by the band and thousands of people, and were escorted to their hotel, "where from the balcony and before the big crowd they were formally welcomed by the Mayor and Mr. James McLeod, president of tne New Zealand Rugby Union and chairman oi the Taranaki Union. The visitors gave their war cry as well as a Maori cry, learned since their arrival m the Dominion, which delighted the crowd. The manager, Mr. Bennett, stated they had been overwhelmed with kindness and hospitality since their arrival in New Zealand, and to-night's proceedings capped everything. The people of South Africa would, he felt sure, appreciate the wonderful way in which the team had been met eo far in New Zealand. ' Mr. McLeod stated that T aranaki in inter/national games had a good record, having 'defeated every team which had visited the province, and could' be relied upon to put up a big fight on Saturday. The T&ranaki men have been in hard training this week under A. L. Humphries, an. ex-All Black, and C. Brown, captain of the New Zealand Service team which toured South Airica in 1919. Taranaki. football has greatly improved this season, and it is confidently expected that now the team has had an opportunity of acquiring combination it •will fully extend the visitors on Saturday. CRITICISMS OF THE TEAM OPINIONS OF ALL BLACKS. [BY T-EI.r.GUAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] WANGANUL 'thursday. . The Springboks confidently anticipate putting up a good performance against Taranaki. although they will greatly miss de K.ock. who broke a. small bone in his foot in yesterday's game- The way they opened the game by ail their power on to the one side of the field and simply forcing their way through caught Wanganui on tiie hap. but success in tnat direction may be »outmanouvred in other centresAmong, the spectators were several All Bracks, inoluding Mr. J. Hunter, who toured Britain with the original All Black team, and who. in his day, waa considered to be New Zealand's finest exponent of five-eighths Play. In criticising the visiting team. Mr. Hunter said they have a> great set oi forwards, who know how to play to make openings for their backs- He admitted it was unfair to judge them on the opening same after a, sea voyage and a long train journey. This fact or want of condition may have been responsible for the relatively indifferent showing of the Springboks, but when they shake down into form and get their combination going they should develop into a very fine side. He said he liked heavy- forwards and the South Afrirja.nn certainly had these. Theiy had weight and forwards practically did as they liked, particularly in scrums and on the line-out. iheir backs were good, but they did not run straight enough and crowded their wing three Quarters too much on the touch line, the wing threequarters were very fine Players and given a little more leeway they would have taken a lot of stooping. De \ llliers was a gTeat fullback. When asked ion?° 1 ?n ar l>i ? Present Springboks with the L9oo All Blacks, Mr. Hunter smilingly retused to be drawn and contented himself ith saying- that the South Africans, when , aequired combination and condition. w °uld be auite a formidable side „Ji7' , G i a ,? g °?i- another member of the expressed the opinion that the Spring:bolos lacked initiative in [attack. The backs, showed a tendency to crowd out on the line in attack, and have not the individuality which th© backs of the original All Blacks possessed- He believes that m test matches the Ne<w Zealand forwards will run the Springboks off their feet. He says be saw the inter-Island at Christchurch, and the Probables versus Possibles matches at Wellington, and those games satisfied him that New Zealand will put a splendid team in the field. TT.& wag great]y impressed with the form shown by the forwards in those games, and those chosen for the test games he considers will be well up to the best New Zealand standard. T B. Pienaar, the captain of the Spring*boks, injured, his hand yesterday, but hopes to be better in a few days. Before leaving, he expressed the pleasure of the team at the very friendly reception' got from spectators of the game yesterday and his appreciation of the way the crowd applauded them for good play. Mr. Bennett, manager of the team, stated that the visit to Airica of the New Zealand Army Service team • bad bad a beneficial influence upon the game there. The South African Rugby Union, he said, was inspired by the- true Rugby spirit and stood fast by the principle of true amateurism. Their hope was .to see the rules of the game so standardised as to make Rugby tbe one universal game of the Empire.

UNDER LEAGUE RULES.

THE THACKER SHIELD.

CONDITIONS NOT ACCEPTABLE.

The council of the New Zealand League recently appointed a committee to rerieo the rules governing the Thacker Shield, the ons ? lL ti rulos having been found to be unworkable. Their decisions were forwarded to the Canterbury League and Dr. Thacker, the donor of the shield, for their sanction, but neither would agree to the proposed alterations. secretary of the Canterbury League, r - W. Moyle. in reply, stated that the trophy and its allotment were governed by Tnf r agreed to by the Canterbury Centre, ine trophy was the property of the president and the secretary of that centre. The 9 otu i < r L * could not therefore make any rules tor the disposal of or playing for the shield other than those laid down. He had interviewed Dr. Thacker on the question, and the latter endorsed the ruling stated. The trophy was competed for as & senior club trophy tor the Canterbury Centre, and in the event or a club team from Canterbury winning back the trophy it would again be competed! tor as a championship trophy. There was also the further ruling that was added two years ago. namely, that in the event of any team ot any other centre winning the tropny any 1 • 111 the same city would not be eligible to challenge the holders without the said holders agreed to play for the shiif>d. Th.e challengers were to be the club premiership winners of the centre, though prefer ence must bo given to the championship winners in other provinces subject to the consent of the Canterbury Rugby League and the centre governing the district of the holders; in such event 50 per cent, of the gross gate was to be divided between the Canterbury Rugby League and the centre governing the holder of the shield. It was decided to reply that the oouncil regretted it could not accept the terms or conditions laid down by the Canterbury League. The council submitted prouosed alterations to rules governing the shield to the Canterbury League, and failing their acceptance the council had no other option but to ask Dr. Thacker and the Canterbury League to withdraw the shield from competition among New Zealand leagues. In the event of Dr. Thacker withdrawing the shield the council decided to make provision for a. trophy to take the place of t-he Thacker Shield so as to keep faith with the leagues that had challenged Pon son by for the Thacker Shield.

THE NEW ZEALAND COUNCIL. The oouncil of tbe New Zealand League met la«t evening. Mr- D. W. McLean presided.

The Hawke's Bay League forwarded a challenge for the Northern Union Cup. The matter was referred to the Auckland League. The Auckland League wrote stating that the following dates for challenge matches in Auckland had been arranged:—July* 30. Auckland v. Wellington : August 6, Hawke's Bay v. Auckland. The Ponsonby-Petone match for the Thacker Shield was originally fixed for August 27. but arrangements were now being made to have this altered to September 10 or September 17. The Auckland Rugby League's touring team would leave for the South on Wednesday August 24, and would play at Christchurch on August 27. Greymouth on August 31, and Wellington on September 3. QUEENSLAND TOUR ABANDONED. The council of the New Zealand Rugby League some months ago endeavoured to make arrangements with tbe Queensland League for a Queensland team to tour New Zealand- At the meeting of the oouncil last evening a cablegram was received stating that tbe Queensland League was unable to eand s, team to New Zealand this season.
