BOOKMAKERS' CLERKS.

STATE SERVANTS DETECTED. In a report to the public serrice commissioner, Detective J. Brophy, of the Criminal Investigation Branch, at Melbourne, has submitted the names of about 14 officers in the State service, whom he had seen acting as bookmakers' clerks at recent race meetings. An inquiry will be held. Detective Brophy had been directed to make inquiries, in consequence of allegations that certain clerffe, who had either obtained leave for recreation purposes or were absent without leave, had been working at the races. The officers mentioned by Detective Brophy have been written to bv the commissioner, and asked for an explanation. An officer of the Law Department, who had been detected at tho races, has forwarded his resignation which has been accepted '
