SEVERAL OWNERS FINED.

CAMPAIGN AGAINST DISEASES. Failure to take the necessary steps to eradicate pests from their orchards, resulted in a number of fruitgrowers being prosecuted by the Department of Agriculture, in the Police Court on Friday before Mb. J. W. Poynton. S.M., Mr. J. W. Collard representing the department. In pracUcaUy all cases the prosecutions wera m respect of codlin moth, though) the action was directed against fire blight in one instance. Penalties ranging from 10a to £5 were inflicted. The infected areas, which included both private and commercial orchards, ranged up to nearly three acres. The evidence by the department's inspectors showed that ample notice had been given the owners to eradicate the pests, but the warnings had been neglected. In two cases 50 per cent, of the trees had been infected," but apparently no steps had been taken to remedy the evil. There were two charges against Georgina Crowthers in respect of her orchard at Remuera. The inspector had found the orchard infected with codlin enoth and fire blight, and had given instructions for their eradication, but stated the work had not been carried tout. Defendant was fined £1 on each charge. A penalty of £5 and costs was imposed on Elizabeth Harriet Webber. A fine of £3 and costs was imposed on Henry Hungerford, the owner of an infected orchard at Waimauku. He did not appear. Elizabeth Moore and J. W. 'Shaw were each fined 10s, and Annie J, Bath £1.
