OXHEY GOLF TOURNAMENT.
KIRKWO'OD COMES SECOND. Australian and N.Z.. Cable Association. (Becd. 11.5 p.m.) LONDON, May 21. J. H. Kirkwood, open golf champion of New Zealand and Australia, came Becond in the tournament at Oxhey with a score of 295, and receives a purse of £80. The cup and first prize Joi £130 was won by Abe Mitchell with a score of 293. The runners-up were A. Massey 296, A. Herd, Leach and Havers 299 each, G. Duncan, E. Ray and Ockenden 301 each, H. Vardon and J. H. Taylor 302 each, and JBraid 304. ' In the first round Kirkwood went out in 39, his score including 4 fives, 4 fours, and 1 three; and came home in 34, including 5 fours, 3 threes, and 1 five- He had three putts on the first, second and thirteenth greens, but otherwise his play was uniformly excellent. He only found the bunkers and rough twice, recovering well. In thu second round he attracted a larger crowd of spectators. He went out in 38, including 3 fives, 5 fours, and 1 three and came home in 34, including 7 fours and 2 threes. His play in every
department was almost monotonous in its faultlessness, except at the sixteenth hole, when, after a 250-yard drive, he found a bunker. He was unlucky on the eighteenth green, lipping the hole in a 4ft. putt. He went through the third round in 72 and the first in 78. East qualified after a replay with nine others for the last three places.
