THE COSTLEY HOME.

MATTER OF WATER SERVICE. CITY SUPPLY DESIRED. The matter of supplementing the present water supply to the Costley. Home by having the city water mains extended to the institution was considered by the Auckland Hospital Board last evening. At a previous meeting it was reported that the One Tree Hill Road Board had stated that arrangements had been made that- in the event of its supply of water giving out water would be received from the City Council. With a view to ascertaining the exact position, the board communicated with the council, and the city waterworks engineer, in reply, stated that the council was under no obligation to supply the road board with water. Mr. J. Rowe said the board should take any steps necessary to have the city water main extended to Green Lane. It was not a great distance, and the cost of material had fallen considerably. The Road Board had prevented the Hospital Board from laying pipes along the road leading to the Costley Home. The chairman, Mr. W. Wallace, said it was absolutely necessary that an adequate supply of water should be provided for the home. If a fire occurred it would be disastrous for the inmates and the home. There were 280 patients in the institution, about 250 of these,being in the female infirmary ward, and their ages ranged from 70 to 90 years. He suggested that the board s solicitors be asked for an opinion on the matter. He also considered that a copy of the city waterworks engineer's letter be sent to the One Tree Hill Road Board for its consideration, and that it be asked to meet a deputation from the board. This suggestion was adopted.
