LORD MAYOR AND PRESS.
A QUARREL IN SYDNEY. NEWSPAPER REJECTS UKASE A. and N.Z. SYDNEY. May 17. The Sydney Morning Herald says that the Lord Mayor, Mr. Lambert, practically demanded the surrender to himself of the editorial discretion of the newspaper as the price at which he would consent to gave information for publication. He dictated two statements to a representative of the Sydney Morning Herald on the condition that they should appear in full as given, otherwise no further information would be given, and he would refuse to see the newspaper's representative. The Sydney Morning Herald, in declining to accept this ukase, says that the discretion of the editor in regard to all matter published must be retained, as much for the protection of the individual and the public as for the well-being of i,he newspaper, but dn this case the grossness of the demand made was actuated by the impropriety of matter of which publication was sought.
