EXPEDITING SETTLEMENT. VISIT BY MINISTERS. CONFERENCE WITH NATIVES. [by telegraph.—OTO CORBESPOKBEXT 2 WELLINGTON. Tuesday! The Minister for Lands, the Hon D H Guthrie, has arranged to leave for th» Bay of Plenty to-morrow evening. go is to meet the Minister for Native Affairs the Hon. J. G. Coates, at Whakata; e, and join i n a conference with representatives of the Urerewa natives regarding the settlement of the land purchased bv the Government in the Urerewa conntrv. The Ministers wish to place settlers oa this land as soon as possible. The position in regard to the Urewero lands has been explained by Ministers on several occasions. The Government has bought native interests representing over 300,000 acres of land, but the land is not partitioned, and many »f the titles are exceedingly complex. The policy of the Native Department in past, years has been to postpone the settlement of the land until the purchase of other interests has made possible the settlement 'A T>mplete blocks. This involves a pn-nt deal of delay, and Ministers are trying to expedite* matters. Four parties are w"rk. ing an roads in the Urewera country with the object of opening the district for settlement.
