SECONDARY SCHOOLS.
TEACHERS' CONFERENCE. QUESTION OF SALARIES. [BY TELEGRAPH. PRESS ASSOCIATION.] WELLINGTON. Thursday. At the Secondary Schools Conference to-day Mr. J. Caughley, director of education, spoke of the desirability of rearranging the primary and secondary courses. If a high state of education was required the variety of the work done must be increased for children who had passed the primary course. He considered New Zealand compared favourably with Australia in the matter of education. A committee was set up which will go into matters connected with school cadets. Other resolutions were : — " That the Minister be urgently requested to amend clauses 18 and 19 of the regulations in such a manner as to make perfectly clear that no board is expected to dismiss any teacher should a school fall in grade; further, that any teacher affected by fall in grade of his school shall have the option of accepting either (1) lower salary in his own school, or (2) transfer to such position in another school as carries with it the same salary as the teacher's position in the former school."
" That mixed secondary schools carrying' out fecial courses of work 'should oeive special consideration with regard to staffing." " That, in order to secure greater efficiency in secondary schools, a more liberal scale of staffing be granted." " That women teachers in secondary schools proceed by £15 increments from the minimum to the maximum salary of their grade." "That annual increments for male assistants be £15 in all grades." " That the salary of women 'entrants into secondary schools be raised to £200." " That the capitation grant of £2 10s per pupil be increased in the case of smaller schools carrying out special courses."
That this association affirm the principle that salaries of secondary school teachers should be fixed by Parliamentary Statute, not by departmental regulations."
" That in the salary schedule for. secondary teachers salaries should definitely depend either on (1) ■ * v - -ade of the teacher ; (2) the grade of' the position held."
