POLES SUFFER HEAVY LOSSES. | By Telegraph—Preas Association—Copyright. (Received 9.15 p.m.) A and N.Z. LONDON, May 11. The Berlin correspondent of the Daily Express estimates that there are 170,000 | men tinder arms in Upper Silesia, 60 per I cent, of whom are Germans. The heavii est fighting so far occurred yesterday at Kosel, where the Italians assisted the ■ Germans and drove back several thousand I of Poles, whose losses in killed and ; wounded were estimated at 500. The Poles are attempting to occupy the German bank of the Oder, between Ratibor and Kosel, bombarding the latter place. Special trains are bringing refugees to Berlin. Great excitement prevails i throughout Germany, where thousands are volunteering daily for service in Silesia. Mr. Austen Chamberlain informed the House of Commons that the insurgents had occupied the greater part cf Upper Silesia. This was regarded by the Allies as a deliberate attempt to frustrate the Versailles Treaty. The Government had no intention of permitting this, and were I in close consultation with the Allies in I regard to the best means of dealing with the situation. AGREEMENT REPORTED.
