OBITUARY.
MR. R. D. STEWART. A well-known figure in" educational circles, Mr. R. D. Stewart, died vesterday at his residence, Claude Road/ Epsom: Mr. Stewart was born at Bristol, England, in 1855, and was educated there. He arrived in Auckland in the ship Jubilee in 1874, and for a time was employed by Messrs. Archibald Clark and Sons in their former 'premises in Shortland Street. On the passing of the New Zealand Education Act, he sat for examination for a teacher's certificate, and being successful was appointed to a position on the staff - of the Welleslev Street School, under the headmastershin ot the late Mr. H. Worthingtou. Some years later he succeeded Mr. Worthingion as headmaster, and subsequentlv was "successively headmaster of the Waiokaraka, Thames, and Onehunga Schools. At a later period Mr. Stewart was appointed an inspector under the Auckland Education Board, a position he held until he retired from the service. He took a livelv mterest in the work of the* New Zealand U-ducational Institute, and in 1896 wss president of the Dominion Council, while he was on three occasions president of the Auckland branch of the institute. Mr. Stewart was a member of the Mount Eden Borough Council for a time.
