OBITUARY.

MR. JAMES WALKER. A veteran of the Maori War, Mr. James Walker, died at the Auckland Hospital on Saturday, at the age of 84 years. He came to the Dominion in 1863, and joined the colonial forces, participating in engagements at the Waifaki Pa and other East Coast skirmishes, under Major St. John. After the cessation of hostilities he was discharged, and entered the timber trade. For the last 18 months he had been an inmate of the Veterans' Home. He was buried yesterday with military honours at Waikaraka, the Rev. D. D. Scott officiating. Seven inmates of the home attended in motor-cars.

MR. JOHN ALEXANDER MAGKAY. One of Auckland's earliest, born residents, Mr. John Alexander Mackay, died, last week at his late residence, Northcote. Mr. Mackay, who was born in Auckland 74 years ago, w&» for many years a successful farmer at Takapurui, where he owned what is now known as the Campbell est&te at Waipapa Bay. He subsequently removed to Northcote, where ho resided till his death. Mr. Mackay js survived by his widow, two sons, Messrs. Frederick and James Mackay, and five daughters. The married daughters are Mrs. T. Wilson, Faparoa. Mrs. W. H. Tonar, Northcote, and Mrs. E. Harvey, Auckland.

SERGT.-MAJOR WAINHOUBE. Sergeant-Major Edward Wainhouse, of the Royal New Zealand Artillery, Auckland, died on Wednesday at the age of 51 vears. He enlisted at Wellington in February, 1893, and was stationed at different times in Wellington, _ Dunedin. and Auckland. During practically the whole ol! his service he waa an instructor to both field and garrison artillery volunteers and territorials. Interment, with military honours took place on Friday.

ME. CECIL ROADLEY. . Mr. Cecil Roadley, fa-merry of Pukekohe, died in Auckland on Thursday in his 69th year. At Pukekohe he owned a bookseller's business. He was a justice of tha peace, and for some time was coroner of that district. He was also an ex-mem-ber of the Pukekohe Borough Council. He is survived by his widow and an adult family. MRS. AMY LAING. The death occurred yesterday of Mrs. Amy Laing, aged 8k wife of Mr. Robert Laing, of Richmond Road. Mrs. Laing vras born at the mission station at Hokianga, in 1839, and was therefore on<> of tho first white children borA in New Zealand. On the outbreak of war with the Maoris Mrs. Laing's family made their wiiy across country to Waltangi, in the B&y of Islands, the children being carried by friendly natives. Tho family then came to Auckland. Mrs. was married in 1857 to Mr. Robert Laing, who in those days was a ropomaker in the city. There are four sons and one daughter and many grandchildren and great grandchildren. The interment will take place in the Symonds Street cemetery this afternoon. A short service will first be held at the Church of Christ, Ponsonby Road. MR. T. 0. CRARR. Mr. Thomas Owen Crabb, a resident of Devonport for over 40 years, passed away at the ago of 80 years. Mr. Crabb was a nativo of Dorset, England, and as & young maji followed the sea. Ho arrived from Africa in the ship Alfred in 1864 and on the opening of tho Thames goldfields in 1867, ho tried his fortune there and remained there for some years. On leaving Thame's Mr. Crabb resided in Auckland City, dually removing to Devonport, where he followed the occupation of a contractor. Mi*. Crabb's wife predeceased him some 20 years ago. He is survived by thi*© tons and four doughters, 35 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. MR. S. V. DEWAR. Cabled advice has been received from Perth, West Australia, of tho death of Mr. Samuel Victor Dewar, second son of Mr atul Mrs. Alexander Dewar. of Auckland. Ho landed hovo with his parents from Australia in 1870, Ho was educated at the Wcllesley Street School and the (irammav School, being a pupil of the latter during the. old barrack days.
