HOSPITAL COMMISSION.
CANTERBURY EVIDENCE. [by telegraph.—-press association.] CHRISTCHURCH, Saturday. Tho Hospital Commission resumed its sitting to-day. Mr. Otley, chairman of tho North Canterbury Hospital Board, said the four large hospitals should receive a flat ruto in Government subsidies. Ho did not favour the abolition of subsidies as they came from the consolidated fund and if abolished the cost would fall on property owners. Members of hospital boards should be elected on a universal suffrage. He could see no use in Government nominees being appointed. Two base hospitals for the South Island would prove satisfactory. Each board should purchase supplies on tho best marketa. Ho was opposed to a purchasing board making tho arrangements. *> Bishop Brodie, on behalf of the Mount Magdala Homo, asked tho Government that tho grant of £800 be continued.
