YACHTING.

OFFICIAL CLOSING OF SEASON. CRUISING AND HARBOUR RACES. SOME CLOSE FINISHES. The official closing of the yachting season in Auckland took place on Saturday, when combined cruising races for yachts and launches were held to Islington Bay. The clubs taking part were: The Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron. North Shore Yacht Club, Ponsonby Cruising Club. Victoria Cruising Club, and the New Zealand Power Boat Association. The weather was not suitable for racing, the wind being light and patchy. When the boats were sent away a light northerly wind was blowing, but before the late-corners had rounded the mark up the harbour the wind backed into the north-west and later into the west. Calms were also experienced at timeß. All the races were started from off the King's Wharf, the boats taking a turn up the harbour as far as St. Mary's Bay before proceeding to Islington Bay. Thia«!?ave the public an opportunity of witnessing the display of "white wings" before the boats left the harbour. The fleet was divided into three classes, the boats of each club racing together in their own cluss. The various classes were got away to time, and some good starts were effected. The arrangements for the races were carried out by the Auckland Yacht and Motor Boat Association. Many of the boats started in several clubs, and thus had an opportunity of winning more than one prize. The most successful of the keel yachts was Victory, wnich earned off two first prizes. Speedwell had the next best performance, having a win and two seconds to her credit. lorangi win a first j and a second prize. In the 26ft muUot-boat classes Waitere II won three races, with Omatere and Sadie second and third respect- i ively in each event. Venus won three races for 22-footers. Marie being second on two occasions, while Lucille was eecond once and third twice. In the 20ft class Waiapu was successful in three races, Waihiri being runner-up twice, while Wayward was second j once and third on two occasions. In the powerlbcat events Coquette won two races, ' while Thelma, Surf, and Jean Grey were j each successful on one occasion. Thelma j and Surf also 6nished third, while Fleetwing and Countess each had two seconds to their credit. The officials were: Starter. Mr. J. Boon- j stra. assisted by Mr. E. Culhane: judge. Mr j E. J. Kelly; timekeeper, Mr. W. D. Ross i Details are as follows:— THE KEEL YACHTS. The keel yachts were sent away to a fine start at 2.30 p.m.. Scout crossing the line first, closely followed by Victory. Speedwell, j Ladye Wilma, Waione, and lorangi: a little later came Colonist, Cynthia, and Maybelle. lorangi soon overhauled the leaders, and was well out in front when the top mark was reached. Passing Stanley Bay on the lead down the harbour, the order was: — lorangi. Victory, Waione, Speedwell, Ladye Wilma. and Scout. The boats were now all tailed out, lorangi being a long way in the lead. After reaching Rangitoto Channel. Victory closed up on lorangi. while Speedwell replaced Waione, the boats finishing in that order. THE CENTRE-BOARD BOATS. The big fleet of centre-board boats was despatched at 2.40 p.m. Waiapu was first away, and was closely followed by Marie. A general mix-up then took place on the line between Foam, Starlight, Sadie, Waitere II and Calypso. Forunately. there was very little wind at the time, all the boats getting clear of one another without damage. The following !<o*ts started !al^:— Gloaming and Wayward, 3m; Rona. 4m; Omatere and Rahiri. 8m; Ngaro and Lilac. 12m. Marie continued her lead until well up the harbour, where she was passed by Waitere 11. The latter gradually drew away from the rest of the boats, and when tVe Sandspit beacon was reached she was a long way in the lead. Next to her came Marie. Venus, Lucille, Waiapu. Calirjso, Starlight, Omatere, Waihiri, Rona, Gloaming, and Daphne, with Lilao last. THE LAUNCHES. The launch handicap was started at 2.50 p m , Lily Meg crossing the. line first, followed by Jean Grey, Thelma. and Kirita. with the rest of the boats handy.. Fleetwing, which got away fifth, immediately assumed the lead, and was more than halfway down the harbour before the slower boats had rounded the top mark. Harbour races were also held by the North Shore Yacht Club for open and half-decked boata The most important event was the race for the 14ft. one one-design class, which wa s won by Mr. C. Wild's Idler. For these events Mr. H. Hill was starter,, and Mr. W. A. Wilkinson judge and timekeeper. Following are the details: — THE ONE-DESIGN CLASS. The competitors in this class were: —Ola 111, Betty. Myria, Edna, Resolute, Idler and Meteor. From an excellent start, Idler was first way. Betty came next, and then Edna, Meteor, Resolute, Ola 111 and Myria in that order. Idler waa still in the lead when the Resolution buoy was reached, rounding it 2m 32s ahead of Meiteor, which had meanwhile run into second place. Edna was next round this mark, and immediately after her came Ola in and, Betty. Myria was 6m astern of Idler, while Resolute was another 10s further away. On the beat to i the Sandspit beacon Betty worked her way i into second place, but could not overhaul Idler, whioh continued her lead tintil the finish. The wind was now very ligh*. and as the boata would not be able to do two rounds of the course before sunset, the officials decided to call the race off on the completion of the first round. THE HANDICAP EVENTS. In the race for the 18ft and under class, Mascotte crossed the line first, followed by Atangatai and Colleen, with the rest of the boats hand?. Rounding the Resolution buoy Mascotte was leading Reore by 50s, the latter being 12s ahead of Atangatai at this mark. The race for the 14ft handicap class brought out ten competitors, but only six completed the course. Continuance went into the lead shortly after the start and was closely followed by Sea Nymph. Sea Mew. and Sea Spook. After rounding the Resolution mark, however. Sea Spook assumed the lead and maintained it until the finish, which was timed: Sea Spook (scr). 4h 52m 15s; Continuance (2m), 4h 55m 40s- Sea Nymph (2m). 5m 10s; Sea Mew (2m). 5h 425; Arawa (6m). 5h 7m 20s ; Redwing (4sm) fih 11m 20s. Result: Sea Spook first. Continuance second. Sea Nymph third. MANUKAU YACHT CLUB. The Manukau Yacht and Motor Boat Club's sweepstake race for yachts on Saturday had to be postponed on account of the light weather. The launch events also lapsed owing to an insufficient number of entnes. A meeting will be held to-night to arrange the resail of the yacht race.
