DAVIS CUP CONTEST.

AUSTRALASIAN TEAM. COMMENT IN ENGLAND. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. (Reed. 12.30 a.m.) LONDON. April 11. Lawn tonnis circles are interested, in the selection of young players f;<r the Australasian Davis Cup team. Though some of those selected are not 'well known in England, the general opinion is that the selection may safely be left to Mr. Norman Brookes. Mr. Scrivener, a well-kinown player, ■writer and handicapper, in an interview, said : " There is a lot of talk about the appointment of old players. The selection committee's duty is to" find the best men available. If there is a doubt about two people, the {.reference should always bo given to the younger man, with a view to looking to the future." Though he is not certain that the four Australian players selected, are the best available,' Mr. Scrivener says he relies on Mr. Brookes' judgment. < He says that the selection of Lycett is conceivable, but he does not think that the Davis Cup contest should be used as a training ground. Mr. Ritchie remarked. " Mr. Brookes knows what he is doing. An international team should be the best, irrespective of ags." The above comment has been provoked by Mr. Brookes' recent announcement to the New South Wales Lawn Tennis Association that Patterson, O'Hara Wood, Thomas, and Heath will not be available for the Australasian Davis Cup team and his suggestion that the team be chosen from Anderson, Hawkes, Peach, and Todd.
