' A British manufacturing firm is now turning out frocks made of string coloured paper material at one guinea apiece. They are embroidered with raffia roses, poppies, and pomegranates, are said to be charming in appearance, and aro guaranteed tp wear five years. These dresses'are produced # in answer to German manufacturers who have sent over a lot of cheap paper suits for men. The British firm claim that they can make anything out of paper from trunks to carpets, and far better than anything ever thought of by the Germans, • Even the Chinese women have come in f<>r criticism for wearing short skirts and aieo for displaying their arms. This criticism applies, however, only to those who have adopted foreign styles % of dress, An \ edict against the wearing of these styles has been issued bv the City Magistrate and Chief of Police of Shanghai. It declares that these fashions make the wearer neither foreign nor Chinese, and adds: " Wearers are devoid of shame and frequent public streets without embarrassr'«t. In future all go offending will be arrested and fined." This year's opening meeting of the Civic Circle, in connection with the Auckland Women's Club, was held on Monday evening, when Mrs, W. Generous response: is being made to the call for funds to build a new creche in connection with the Grey Street Mission House, of which Sister Hannah is in charge.
