Commissioner H. C. Hodder and Mrs. Hodder, of the Salvation Army, were passengers for the Sooth by the Main Trunk express last night. Mr. M. J. Kennedy has been appointed general manager for the Wellington Gas Company, foUovring the retirement of Mr. J. HL Helliwell, who has been secretary for the company for 37 years.
Lierct.-Colonel J. E. Barton, chief staff officer for the Canterbury Military District, who was at one time stationed at Auckland, has voluntarily resigned from the New Zealand Staff Corps to take up another occupation.
Messrs. A. E. Barker. H. T. Milnes, L. A. Andrea, U. Howeth, H. S. Robin son, G. M. Tartakovir, N. Andrews. P, Nettleton, M. Leman, T. P. Defanr, of Christchnrch ; F. B. Ciark, of Wellington ; and P. H. Brown, of Dunedin, are at the Grand Hotel.
Mr. J. P. KcPhail, Mayer of Birken head, announced last evening that he would not seek re-election at the municipal election in April. He mentioned that he had had 12 yeanf continuous tttvice on the council, occupying the mayoral chair durxng the last six years. The deputy-Mayor, Mr. E. G. Skeates, and Mr. A. Hadfield voiced the regret of the members at Mr. McPhail's decision, the latter expressing the hope that he would stand for a seat on either the Hospital Board or tho Harbour "Board, hi order that the district would not entirely lose his services. Mr. McPhail, in reply, intimated that it was more than iikery he would stand for the Hospital Beard.
