KIRIPAEA MINE CLOSED
< OUTCOME OF GO-SLOW.
ALTERNATIVE BEFORE MEN.
NORMAL OUTPUT. OR NO WORK.
The continuation of the go-slow policy at the Northern Coal Company's mine at Kiripaka culminated yesterday in the mine being closed indefinitely.
The liquidator of the company. Mr. W. D. Holgate, visited the mine on Monday, January 24, and conferred with the miners, when an arrangement was arrived at 'under which the men undertook to produce over 100 tons of coal a day, and in the meantime to communicate with the Miners' Federation on the question of discontinuing the go-slow. The reply received from the federation was to continue the go-slow, and last Tuesday evening the mine manager informed the men that they had the option of either "calling off" the go-slow or taking their tools out of the mine. The men elected to adopt the latter course; consequently the mine has been closed. This means that about 60 men have been thrown out of employment.
