MR. JUSTICE REED.
The appointment of Mr. J. R. Reed i to the Supreme Court Bench will be ; generally welcomed. Not for many years has a member of the Auckland Bar been chosen for promotion to the judicature, and his colleagues will agree that the distinction could not have been better bestowed. The son of a distinguished Auckland journalist, Mr. Reed's career has been intimately associated with the province and city throughout his life, and it is no exaggeration to say that he enjoys the respect and confidence of the whole community in a high degree. The qualities by which he has gained distinction in his profession and won and held public regard eminently fit him for the honourable and responsible duties to which he has now been called. The official announcement names Mr. Reed as the successor of Mr. Justice Chapman, a judge whose public service has ever been marked by the highest conceptions of justice. His retirement cannot be regarded without regret, but it will be recognised that in losing one of its most honoured members, the Supreme Court is gaining the services of a judge who will be no less devoted to its ideals.
