THE CHARMS OF 7CYLAND. WANTS OF THE ADULTS. LAVISH YOUNG PEOPLE. Few commodities li&ve * not been in demand by the crowds which have thronged almost every f*lasst of shop dtir- • ing the past few days. Tovs, although j they have greatly increased in price, are ! much in demand, ai:d a heavy volume of | business vras reported by those shopi keepers who cater for the juvenile popnj lation. The noi.se of squeakers and mouth ; organs, inseparable from the Christmas i season was much in evidence throughout ! the day and announced the fact that the : festive celebrations so far as the children j were concerned had already c^mracnced. AH shops which cater for the adult | population were extremely busy. The sale | of goods necessary for domestic purposes i naturally was abnormally heavy. Those I business houses which largely stock j artdes jpuitable for Christmas presents I were rushed, sisowip- tisat the custom of | bestowing presents has not in any device j diminished, the kind articles t selected for this purpose were being pur- | chased, but. i; v.rs noticed that young | men and women in previous years who j ind mt an ■nrime sufficient to enable them to buy costly presents, are this vear I among the best patrons of fancy goods 1 shops. It :s quite a common thin* this j season to find the young men having gold j wristlet watches or other silkies of jewellery equally valuable for favoured frier-ds. Fancy-priced silk stockings are also included in the list of presents. Sira;'<w!r. j young women are spending more lavishlv jon presents for men, c ; gar._ 11e co-t* I ing in Eome instances pound*, pnd similar | tokens coming within ihe range of their • purse. i The more matured members of the comj munity, while spending roonev freeir, nra | more cautious than the younger ones, and are endeavouring to secure a greater return ior their outlay. There is not ev<- ■ dent a desire for showy display anions , these people, but nevertheless thev are spending just as much as formerlv. Thei e is a considerable ran on books.
