SEAMEN AND SECRETARY.

REPUTATION OF EXECUTIVE. A. and N.Z. SYDNEY, Dec. 11. Not-withstanding the High Court's injunction restraining Mr. T. Walsh from acting as secretary of the Seamen's Union, the latter body has overridden its executive, and declared it will continue to recognise Mr. Wa'sh as secretary. LAND BANK FOE N.S. WALES. The Legislative Assembly read a first time a Bill to enlarge the operations of the Government Savings Bank by the addition of a rural department to "assist primary producers and associated industries. There is a growing feeling that the Prohibition referendum, which should ho taken before June 30. will be abandoned on account of the provision for compensation, the amount involved being estimated at from £10,000.000 to £15,000,000. SHIPBUILDING AGREEMENT. MELBOURNE. Dec. 11. A shipbuilding hitch has been overcome by an agreement with the Commonwealth Government, signed by the unions concerned. CIVIL SERVICE SALARIES. MELBOURNE. Dec. 11 Mr. Hughes has announced that the salaries of Commonwealth Civil servants wiil be increased from £IS6 to £208. with proportionate increases to £300. also pn allowance of 5s for each child will be granted. RIFLEMEN FOR NEW ZEALAND. SYDNEY. D*c. 11. ' A Commonwealth team of 12 will compete at the New Zealand Rifle' Association meeting in March. DEATH OF AN ATHLETE. SYDNEY. Dec. 11. The death occurred to-day at Tamora of Henry Wyse. a former champion athlete. He held the two miles walking and running championships of New Zealand. MR R. D. MEAGHER'S BILL. SYDNEY. Dec. 11. In the Assembly a Bill to reinstate Mr. R. D. Meagher on the roll of solicitors was read a second time in a i thin house by 30 to 9. DR. GILRUTH'S SUCCESSOR. BRISBANE. Dec. 11. Mr. F. E- Urquhart, commissioner of police, has been appointed Administrator of the Northern Territory, in succession to Dr. Gilruth.
