NORTHCOTE WAR MEMORIAL.

Sir, —It is evident from Mr. Horace Hunt's letter published in the Herald of December 8 that ho is under a misapprehension regarding the proposed war memorial for Xorthcote. Mr. Hunt is in error in stating that " the proposal is to erect iron gates and a shelter shed " Nothing of the kind is intended bv the Women's Progressive League, who are the promoters of the district memorial. What i" proposed is a memorial arch and shelter reat in permanent materials, with marble panels inset for the names of all soldiers from our district who served in the war It is suggested that the memorial be placed at the entrance to the grounds of the new school as a reminder to the rising veneration of the sacrifices made bv former scholars and residents, and being a central position it is considered the best site inr a local memorial of this descriiition As a member of the Memorial Committee I worKed for and favoured a new town hall on the site of the Borough Council Cham hers, but this proposal was not acceptable to the ratepayers owl,,- to the financial nuestson. The present proposal is favoured l.y the majority and is being ? enerouslv supported, therefore we should" give our undn-ided assistance to the ladies who have taken the project, in hand and help '■• make a success of it. Differences of ■pinion at this stage as to the form of memorial will mean failure. Competitive designs w,Il be called for. and provided Uie residents are imbued 1 with the right spirit there should be no difficultv in raising the amount aimed at. viz.. £600 for such a worthy purpose. The proposal has bee., approved bv the Borough Council. no.<rd ot Kducation. School Committee and a number of residents. There is a •trong feeling in the district, which has • •■marlnble record of war service that 'he names of the fallen should he preyed t,, those who are to come after -is ; "»J mi this proposal lies the opportunity a memorial would be worthy of the ,|! - and a tribute to the memory of ' ?« who shared in the tremendous vie- . '"' V so .| ie "'-ly hough I for us and whose i<u*B will be ....,, among us no more. P. Parsons O'Leaht. j Rangiatea, Xorthcote, December 9 !
