A welcome to the Hon. Geo. Fowlds was given at the Chamber of Commerce last evening by the Auckland Land Values League, Mr. G. Stevenson presiding over a large attendance. Mr. H. Dearsley, on behalf of the League, and Mr. R. Taylor, for the Proportional Representation Society, made brief speeches of welcome. In reply, Mr. Fowlds gave an interesting account of his experiences in the United States, saying that one of the most notable features of American life was the high cost of living and the extravagance of the wealthy classes. In restaurants he was frequently charged lOd each for potatoes and on inquiring from a jeweller the price of a lady's wristlet watch of neat design he was informed it was £1100. He reviewed the Presidential election and recounted the working of prohibition. He said he considered the land reform movement of growing importance in the United States and that the operation of the initiative and referendum was of inestimable value in educating the public to reforms of every description. Mr. Fowlds was heartily thanked for his address, and a resolution was passed expressing pleasure at his return.
