" Wager," Hamilton.—Up to date Tinopai has contested 123 races, and she has won 22. " Hard Duck."—Delight was struck out of the Auckland Cup at 2.10 p.m. on November 29. " Whaka," Devonport.—l. Nelson contested the Auckland Cup on four occasions. viz . 1685. 1886. 1888 (New Year's Day), and 1888 (Boxing Day). 2. Lochiel was sired in England and foaled in New Zealand. " Songster."—Carbine was defeated by Ensign, Sedition. Lochiel. Abexcorn. Melos, and Marvel. At five years old Carbine was only defeated on one occasion, tiz., in the Allaged Stakes (one mile), when Marvel won. NOTES BY PHAETON. THE AUCKLAND CUP. Matters in connection with the Auckland Cup remain pretty much in the same state as at the date of the first acceptance, the 13 horses paid up or still holding their ground, but several defections from the lightweight quarter may be anticipated when the nnal payment of £20 comes to be faced next Friday. Reports from Avondale credit Uncle. J»ed with training, on most satisfactorily, and with that fact established the veteran may be expetced to make a courageous effort to improve on his record last year, when he beat all his field save Karo. First Salute, who promises to strip in great condition, holds his place firmly as favourite, and it will apparently require something of the pronounced order to dethrone him from the post of honour. Most of the visiting division may be expected to arrive during the coming week, and it goes without saying that their advent is awaited at Elieralie with a very keen interest. MARES AND THE CUP. A brace of mares are engaged in the forthcoming Auckland Cup in the shape of Oratress (9.2) and Red Ribbon (8.4). ana, judging from advices to hand, they are to os sent J«orth in the hope of one or the other being able to extend the mares' winning record in the Ellerslie race. In the 46 contests that have eventuated to date for the Auckland Cup the mares have only six victories to their credit, but at various times several others finished close handy to the winner. The race, it is interesting to relate, was 21 years old before a mare succeeded in beating the opposition, Lottie, who carried the colours of the late Mr. James Kean, winning in 1894, and in the succeeding year Anita scored for the Messrs. Duder. A period of 19 years then elapsed before Warstep won for Mr. C. G. Daigety. In 1918 Mascot earned the colours of the Messrs. Riddiford to victory, and last year Karo increased the mares record when she scored in Mr. G. D Greenwood's colours. Oratress (9.2) is called upon to carry 91b. in excess of that under which she won the New Zealand Cup last month, while Red Ribbon (8.4) has exactly a, stone more to carry than when she filled the role of runner-up to Fiery Cross in the decision of the Auckland Cup of 1917. '• A PROMISING HORSE. . Judging from the manner in which Sunart is credited with routing the opposition in the settlement of the Woodville Handicap, he has at last succeeded in developing a dash of that good form which he was held to possess, but which he failed to produce in his previous engagements this season, for he failed in each instance to secure a situation in each of the races he contested. Prior to Mr. J. ,B. Reid leaving for England in April, last he sold Sunart to Mr. R. A. McHenzie,. and the sum involved in the transaction is assessed at £1500. In his first engagement m Mr. McKenzie's colours Sunart went near to capturing a big stake, for at Riccarton in May last he ran Royal Star to a, head in the Royal Handicap of £1250, arid, "'v 1611 - it is remembered that he conceded his rival a year and 111b. in weight and that the mile and a-half was cut out in 2m. 33 4-55.,- there was merit in his performances. Sunart figures among the candidates l° honours in the Auckland Cup, and, now that he has given some evidence of fulfilling expectations, he.may be given an opportunity °i naming distinction in the leading event of the summer season at Ellerslie. Sunart can, boast of a high-class pedigree, the leading lines of which read as follow: — SUNART. Sir*: Sunny Lake, by Sundridge (son of Amphion) from Pearl of the Loch, by Persimmon (son of St. Simon). Darn: Latchet, by St. Alwyne (eon, of St. Frusqum and grandson of StL Simon) from Latch Key, by Padlock (son of Wenlock). THE RAILWAY HANDICAP. It iB on all hands recognised that Mr. McManemm has succeeded in formulating a highly-complex problem in connection with the Railway Handicap, and the situation is such, and so many of those engaged can be ticked off as probables, that if the whole 20 went to the post such would only be a fitting compliment to the weight-adjuster. It seems pretty safe to conclude that Arrowsmith will be sent up to fulfil his engagement, and the probable, presence of the English horse in the race is to be' viewed as an especially pleasing feature. A quintette of three-year-olds figure in the race, and with Humbug. Chrysostom, Right and Left, Landslide, and Dovelet embracing that division it can be validly advanced that they include some very speedy material.

LEAVES FROM MY NOTEBOOK. . The newly-formed Franklin Racing Club intended holding their first meeting at Pukekphe in February, but, as the date selected clashed with that fixed for the Clevedon Show, it was decided to apply for another date some time in March. The Pukekoheites have taken up the matter of financing the purchase of a course in a fine spirit. Settlers to the number of 95 have each promised a heifer, and no less than 70 of the same are in the hands of the club. In the event of a totalisator permit being granted the Franklin Racing Club would soon become on© of the most flourishing country racing bodies about the Auckland district. Aureate, the two-year-old full sister to Desert Gold, managed to get on the winning list at Woodville on Thursday last, but the success that came to her could not be rated highly, for on the preceding day she was counted out of a place when put in with the handy impost of 7.7, and in the race.which ehe won she could only beat a moderate in Taiparua (who she met at equal weights) by a, neck. Now that All Black's daughter has started her winning account, it will be interesting to note the standard she will attain So far as the Great Northern Foal Stakes la concerned, the prospects of Aureate following in the footsteps of her illustrious relative by annexing that event do not appear bright.

. Rossini, whose brace of surprise defeats in the Great Northern Derby and Auckland Plate marked his closing efforts as a three-year-old, and who has only raced once in «he interval, figures among the acceptances for the A.R.C Railway Handicap, and as he has also been left in the 26th Royal Stakes, R. J. Mason evidently entertains some hopes of the son of Martian registering a good Pfsnfonmanoe during the progress of the A.R.C. Summer Meeting. The Shortland Plate, the opening event of the.A.R.C. Summer Meeting, and which is limited to the division that have not won a stake of the value of £250, or collectively £500, has invariably given rise to a good contest, and with 27 engaged in the race set down for decision at Ellerslie on the 27th instant, there is every prospect of Mr. C. O'Connor having to again marshal a strong field in the mile race. Right and Left has failed to accomplish anything of note this season, but nevertheless Mr. G. L. Stead is found continuing the engagements of the three-year-old black gelding in important races. Right and Left figures in the Railway Handicap, Summer Cup, Great Northern Derby, and Royal Stakes, which events come up for decision at the forthcoming summer meeting at Ellerslie. The acceptances received by the Waipa Racing Club for their annual race meeting, fixed to be held at Te Awamutu on Saturday next, axe all round of such a highly-satis-factory character that a record gathering appears to be well assured. With special train arrangements, there should be a very large muster of sports at the Waikato ground in the event of fine weather 'prevailing. Mr. G. Li. Stead being now included among the residents of. Waikato and his training establishment situated in close proximity to Te Awamutu, it was to be expected that he would patronise the Waipa Racing' Club's meeting. Starland figures in the Te Awamutu Cup and Right and Left in the Flying Handicap. The New Zealand-bred Finmark, whose stake earnings fall far short of th© £3000 which ho cost the New South Wales sportsman, Mr. A. F. Wade, has several important engagements at forthcoming Sydney meetings, but in every instance he is called upon to carry a stiff burden. In the Summer Cup (one mile five furlongs) 8.12 is opposite Finmark's name, and in Tattereall's Cup (one mile and a-half) he is called upon to carry 9.0. The Australian-bred colt Dunedin continues to score for his new owner, Mr. W. R. Kemball.* The latest capture registered by the good-looking son of Linacre was the Oete Handicap of £300 at Woodville. Dunedin having won four of the five races he has been called upon to contest since passing into Mr. Kemball'a hands, the Maeterton sportsman has good reason to rejoice over the purchase of the bay oolt.

Arrowsmith's brilliancy was again demonstrated this week, and is reported ae follows by " Templar":— One of the best gallops put tip at Riccarton for many a. day was registered by Arrowsmith, who, with Bert Ellis in the saddle, jumped off at the winning post and ran the first three furlongs in 35 2-5e.. four furlongs in 485., five furlongs m lm'.. six furlongs in lm. 12 2-55., seven furlongs in lm. 255., and the mile, easing up, in lm. 39 2-ss. He pulled up very well. It is quite evident that Gloaming will require to be at his best when the Islington Plate comes up for decision at Ellerslie on the 29th inst. if he is to silence the Englishbred horse.

. It would, of course, have been highly pleas!"2 to chronicle a win for Royal Irish in the Tauranga Cup. seeing that he stands out as a veteran of the race track; but, all the same, Scrap o' Paper's victory was appropriate, for he was bred in the East Coast district.

Mr. A. B. Williams is apparently quite convinced that Humbug cannot at present, stay properly, for he paid forfeit for the big chestnut in connection with the Great Northern Dcvby. Humbug figures in the 26th Royal Stakes, and a six furlong race is well within his reach.

The record entry . for a race decided at Ellerslie under the Auckland Racing Club has been further advanced. The Grey Handicap, which figures on the last day of the approaching summer meeting, has attracted an entry of 76. The race is run over five furlongs.

Hymestra is credited with running a good race in the Feilding Stakes, but on the following day he figured amongst the " also ran " division that contested the Oroua Stakes. . The son of Hymettua has been paid U P. for in the A.R.C. Railway Handicap, in which race with 8.1 he can be termed nicely treated.

The Waipa Maiden Handicap, which is set down for decision at Te Awamutu on Saturday next, promises to attract a very large field, no less than 45 having been paid up for. The fact of the race being nil* over the sprint course of five furlongs no doubt played a strong part in attracting the extensive acceptance Est.

The youngster racing under, the title of Tommy Rot, and who distinguished u.-meeii in the.decision of the Nursery Handicap at Woodville on Wednesday last, is a full brother to the Great Northern Guineas winner. Listowel (by AbsurdLysistrata). The Charlemagne 11. gelding, Mangamahoe, who has not carried silk since last June, figures among the acceptances for the Te Awamutu Cup, in which he is equal top weight with Glen Canny, 9.0 being the impost of each. When offered by auction at Ellerslie in June, Mangamahoe was knocked down at 700gns., Mr. Potts being announced as the owner.

After registering six successive defeats this season, several of which cost hie followers a good round sum, Maioha. managed to get on the winning list at Woodville on Thursday, when he carried 8.4 to victory in the Gothard Memorial Handicap. Maioha figures in the A.R.C. Railway Handicap with 7.9.

Rockfield, who has not succeeded in repaying a shilling of the large sum be cost his now owner last autumn, is down for an engagement at To Awamutu on Saturday next in the Ohaupo Handicap (seven furlongs), in which he has been awarded 8.7

The decision of the A.R.O. Committee in fixing the first race at the summer meeting to be started at 11.30 a.m. is to be warmly approved on several grounds, the principal one of which is that it will enable people to return to town at a reasonable hour.

The Great Northern Foal Stakes of 1920 finds 15 horses left in, with the unbeaten Mermin as the one most prominently in the limelight. Matters bear the bright tint for the son of Absurd again carrying Mr. W. G. Stead's colours prominently.

The two-year-old races set down for decision at the A.R.C. Summer Meeting have attracted splendid lists of nominations, and much interest will be centred in the various contests.

The connections of Prince Willonyx have decided to give the English horse a run in the Te Awamutu Cup, m which is is called upon to carry 8.1131b. below the top-weights, Mangamahoe and Glen Canny.

Advices from Riccarton credit Vespucci with having progressed very satisfactorily since he raced at the C.J.C. Spring Meeting, and he is regarded in a favourable light for the Great Northern Derby.

No lees than six candidates for Auckland Cup honours figure in the To Awaxnutu Cup, and, that, of course, will serve to invest the Waikato race with much additional interest. Final payments for the Auckland Cup and Railway Handicap fall due on. Friday next. Up to date Kennaquhair has won in stakes £16,326. . HAMILTON RACING CLUB. The marked success that has of late years attended the meetings held under the auspices of the Hamilton Racing Club is well reflected in the programme of events drawn up in connection with the annual gathering to be held at Claudelands on February 16 and 17 next, for the sum allotted to the 16 events runs out to £6250. The Hamilton Cup is worth £1000, and the leading event on the second day the Waikato Handicapcarries a stake of £800. The jumping division iB well catered for with two events, each worth £300, while the two chief sprint races are respectively worth £650 and £550. From the programme, which will be found published in full in another column, it will be seen that- norminations for allevents close on January 21 at 5 p.m. AUCKLAND TROTTING CUP. The adjustments framed by Mr. F. W. Edwards in connection with the Auckland Trotting Cup look like working out well. Of the limit division, Kewpie and. Gold Girl appear to have the best prospects of claiming the attention of the judge. Gold Boy (12yds. behind) and Moneymaker (36yds behind are a pair that can be depended upon to stay out the journey well; and though Man-o'-war is set a stiff task to concede 84yda. start to the limit division, he will certainly have something to say in the finish.
