A. Wintlow, Consul-General for New Zealand, says tho San Francisco Commercial : News. There is a great _ shortage of all ; kinds |of building material in New ; Zealand; especially timber, says ; the despatch. It seems clear that large quantities must bo procured from h the - West Coast' of : tho-United States and; Canada if ; building construction is to be carried out as contemplated Tyithin the next few years.; There is"a ! great shortage of homes for the ' working ; people as well as office and other business structures,, warehouses and schools. The accessible forests of the'' Dominion '"are exhausted, and little other than the rougher materials for construction work are available. '> A large corporation has, been organised , with headquarters in' Auckland and has sent. a representative to tho West Coast of the United States and ' Canada to arrange for a' supply- of timber: from there._ It is claimed - that New; Zealand within the next two or three' years ; could consume 40.005,000 ft/ or 50,000,000 ft. •of timber from America.
