ENTERTAINMENTS.

COMBINED RECITAL.

I The musical recital. participated in by Miss Mina Caldow (contralto). Miss Evelyn Wytrian' (solo pianist), Mr. Barry Coney (baritone), and Mr. Eric Waters (pianist and accompanist), -was given at the Town Hall conceit chamber last evening before a large assembly of music-lovers. The programme, an excellent on©, possessed many uncommon features, and was moreover replete with interest to the serious concert-goer. The demand for encores was so considerable that the reasonable length of the programme was somewhat taxed, and in one instance the curtailment of a most acceptable suite for two pianos was deemed advisable, to the no small disappointment of many. Miss Caldow s numbers, sung with her accustomed ftnish, included a powerful exposition of .Donizetti s fine aria "O Mio Fernando" and group which included Ronald's *" Love's Philosophy/ Oliver's " Pearls," and Elgaj 3 'The Poet's Life." Miss Wylrian's pianoforte solos were played with eureness of technique, which frequently rose to enviable heights of brilliancy. Palmsren's "May Night " and "The Dragon F 47., ere ? ac P in their way enjoyable, while the pianist also gave a. searching exposition of Brahms' " Rhapsodie " op 119 Mr. Barry Coney was heard, at" his' best in. the diversified solos, " When . Thy Blue Eyes " (Lassen), " None but an Aching Heart (Tschaikowsky), " Devotion " (Schumann), " Onaway, Awake" /Cowen).> and Head's delicately-fantastic "Ships of Arcady" and the finely-constructed, " Nocturne." Arensky's diverting " Silhouettes," „op. ,23. arranged for two pianos, found sympathetic and highly-capable exponents in Miss Wyman and Mr. Waters", who also gave a telling performance of Aries's " Romance," op. 51. Miss. Caldow and Mr. Coney were happily associated in Liza Lehmann's entertaining : song-cycle, " Love and Spring," which was performed for the first time in Auckland at ! this recital. The work, embodying 11 different solo and duet numbers, is written j in the late, composer's best style and makes no concessions to mediocrity in its : interpretation. Both ' vocalists were, congenially suited throughout and sang with much expression. -Mr. Eric Walters, as accompanist, was invariably equal to all requirements. CARTER . THE GREAT. The talented " magician." Carter the Great, is f still delighting large audiences at His Majesty's Theatre. A new illusion " levitation." has been added to his already great programme and is one of the big successes of the show. The season will close on Sat urday evening next and a special matinee, which should prove a powerful magnet for the young folks, will be given that afternoon. A feature of the matinee will be the feeding of the lion at the conclusion of the performancean operation which the children should find highly diverting. CONCERT AT SOLDIERS' CLUB. A concert will be given by some of Auckland's leading artists at the Returned Soldiers' Club at 8 o'clock this evening. A J eood programme has been arranged.
