VENTILATION OF A MINE.

PAEROA. Thuwdsy. An interesting mining case cam* before Mr. H. A. Young, S.M., at the Magi*trate's Court, Paeroa, , to-day, when the inspector of mine* proceeded against the manager of the Rising Sun goldmine at Owfiaroa for not complying with the Act in regard to the ventilation of the mine. The inspector gave evidence of visiting the mine and finding that the face where th« men were working was ventilated by com pressed air from a one-inch pipe. "There were indications of gas where the wen were _ working. Evidence was given by the manager and three of the miners, who considered that the air was good. Counsel for the defence pointed out that though the act stated tha* the temperature of the , mine must not exceed 83 deg the temperature on this occasion was oniv 70 deg.
A fine of £5 was imposed, the inspector remarking that it was the first case in the district.
